Old Vine Registry Celebrates Milestone with Over 4,000 Vineyard Entries

The Old Vine Registry recently celebrated a remarkable achievement by surpassing 4,000 entries, showcasing aged vineyards from 39 countries around the globe.

This milestone highlights the registry’s steady progress towards its ambitious goal of registering 10,000 vineyards by 2027.

Expansion of Criteria

Launched in June 2023 with 2,183 initial entries, the registry has broadened its criteria to include vineyards planted in 1990, which now qualify as 35 years old.

This adjustment reflects the ongoing commitment to preserving the heritage of the vine and wine sector.

International Endorsement

In a noteworthy development, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has endorsed a resolution to support the documentation of old vineyards and grapevines, aligning with the mission of the Old Vine Registry.

This endorsement is expected to fuel excitement and participation in the initiative.

Alder Yarrow, a prominent wine writer and the operational leader of the registry, expressed his enthusiasm about the OIV’s support.

He believes the resolution reinforces the significance of their efforts and will inspire producers and regions to actively share their histories of historic vines.

Engagement and Support Opportunities

In a bid to further engage vineyard owners, the Old Vine Registry launched a competition in June 2024 designed to stimulate interest and participation.

If producers want to feature their vineyards, they can find submission guidelines on the official website at www.oldvineregistry.org.

The registry is also on the lookout for volunteers willing to engage in research on older vineyards.

Additionally, financial contributions from donors are crucial to sustain this non-profit endeavor.
