Kiwi White Wines Dominate the Market
In the month leading up to December 28, 2024, New Zealand emerged as the top source for still white wines in the UK.
This year saw impressive growth, both in terms of sales volume and value, with increases of 9.7% and 7.3% respectively compared to the previous year.
Consumer Preferences and Trends
UK consumers are increasingly willing to splurge on Kiwi white wines, with the average price per bottle climbing to £8.09.
This is significantly higher than the overall average for white wines in the market, which rests at £6.69.
Chris Stroud, who manages the UK and Europe market for New Zealand Winegrowers, was pleased to report strong sales of New Zealand white wines during the bustling Christmas season.
He pointed out that during festive occasions, consumers often opt for premium options, which bodes well for the popularity of New Zealand wines.
Stroud emphasized the role of Sauvignon Blanc in this success, explaining that it plays a central part in the market—accounting for half of all spending on Sauvignon Blanc in the UK.
He also noted the growing interest in other New Zealand white varieties, such as Pinot Gris, which offers retailers a chance to capitalize on the premium segment of the market.
Impact on Red Wines
The holiday season was also beneficial for New Zealand’s red wines, boasting an average bottle price of over £10.50.
In related news, New Zealand Winegrowers will host its Annual Trade Tastings at the end of January in Dublin, London, and Edinburgh, in conjunction with Wine Australia.
Trade professionals are invited to access catalogues and register for these exciting events.
