Berkmann Wine Cellars has expanded its Australian wine offerings by introducing two remarkable producers: Kooyong from the stunning Mornington Peninsula and Rieslingfreak from South Australia.
This addition marks a significant enhancement to Berkmann’s lineup, which already includes prestigious names like Yarra Yering, Lethbridge, Langmeil, and Woodlands.
Kooyong Winery
Located in Tuerong on the scenic Mornington Peninsula, Kooyong has built a stellar reputation for crafting exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Since the Gjergja family took over the vineyard in 2004, they have poured their efforts into establishing its esteemed standing in the wine community, culminating in Kooyong being named James Halliday’s winery of the year in 2012.
Rieslingfreak
Conversely, Rieslingfreak is dedicated to producing outstanding Riesling wines sourced from the renowned Clare and Eden Valleys in South Australia.
Founded in 2009 by John Hughes, who grew up immersed in the Riesling tradition of Clare Valley, the winery draws on Hughes’ passion for this grape variety, a passion reflected in the playful nickname he earned during his university studies.
Collaborative Efforts
Alex Hunt MW, Berkmann’s purchasing director, shared his thoughts on these exciting new additions, emphasizing that while they aim to be comprehensive, they recognized a notable gap in their offerings from the Clare Valley and Mornington Peninsula.
Hughes expressed his excitement about the collaboration, noting that both family-run wineries are united by their dedication to quality and sustainability.
This shared ethos is set to resonate through their wines, making this partnership a fitting and promising venture for both parties.
