Bancroft Welcomes Thaya
In a notable expansion of its collection, Bancroft has welcomed Thaya, marking the first time a Czech winery has joined the ranks of the esteemed importer.
This exciting development highlights the rich wine culture emerging from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic.
About Thaya Winery
Thaya Winery, nestled in the Znoimo sub-region of Moravia, is guided by the talented winemaker Jakub Smrčka.
Smrčka crafted his first vintage when he was just 20 years old back in 2011.
The estate spans 105 hectares and boasts a diverse selection of grape varieties, which includes Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, and Zweigelt.
Lenka Sedlackova MW, who manages brand and purchasing for Central and Eastern Europe at Bancroft Wines, shared her excitement for the unique wines that Thaya brings to the table.
As someone who hails from the Czech Republic, she expressed that this is a long-awaited opportunity to introduce wines from her homeland.
Her previous hesitations revolved around finding the perfect fit—an endeavor to unearth a project that offered a range of quality wines at competitive prices and the potential for success in various distribution channels.
For her, Thaya has confidently ticked all these boxes with its modern, approachable wines characterized by lower alcohol levels.
Quality and Diversity
Sedlackova further noted Thaya’s dedication to cultivating a wide variety of grapes native to the regions that once formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
She mentioned varieties like Grüner Veltliner and St. Laurent, stating that while these wines may differ from their Austrian counterparts, they typically shine with a fruit-forward character and a lighter structure.
Looking ahead, Ivo Jakubec, Thaya Winery’s export manager, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Bancroft.
He envisions this collaboration as a significant step toward boosting the visibility of Czech wines in the UK market.
Acknowledging the lesser-known status of Czech wines in the global arena, Jakubec remains optimistic that together they can highlight the exceptional quality emerging from Moravia.
Upcoming Tastings
For those eager to explore the offerings from Thaya, Bancroft’s upcoming Spring and Summer Edit event on March 24 presents a perfect opportunity.
Attendees will have the chance to taste Thaya’s wines, and they can look forward to meeting winemaker Jakub Smrčka, who will be in attendance.
