Accolade Wines Joins the Initiative
Accolade Wines, a prominent name in Australia’s wine sector, has announced its recent commitment to the Bottle Weight Accord, joining the ranks of just two other newcomers: Botanica Wines from South Africa and Albert Heijn, the Netherlands’ leading supermarket chain.
Goals of the Bottle Weight Accord
This initiative, which kicked off in November 2023 under the wing of the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR), aims to encourage its members to minimize the average weight of their wine bottles to 420 grams for 75cl servings.
Esteemed organizations such as Tesco, Endeavour Wines from Australia, and Viña Concha y Toro have already pledged their involvement in the Accord.
Emma Gibson, who spearheads sustainability efforts at Accolade Wines, shared that the company has made significant strides in lightening glass since 2022.
She highlighted their successes in reducing the weight of glass within their European offerings and expressed a commitment to extend these initiatives to wines produced in Australia and New Zealand.
With enthusiasm, Accolade Wines looks forward to collaborating with other participants in the Accord and leveraging shared insights to tackle ongoing challenges.
Support and Collaboration
Dr. Peter Stanbury, the research director at SWR, welcomed the addition of these new signatories, noting that the rapid accumulation of participants showcases the rising momentum behind the Accord.
He underscored how the Accord’s goals resonate throughout the entire wine supply chain, affecting everyone from growers to distributors and retailers on a global scale.
In a parallel move, the Margaret River Wine Association has launched the Margaret River Lightweight Glass Packaging Charter.
This initiative aims to align closely with the aspirations of the Bottle Weight Accord, taking into account the unique needs of the Margaret River region while promoting lighter glass packaging.
